There’s something about closed roads, the mystical quality of their absence of maintenance, the lack of traffic and the feeling that you’re not quite meant to be there.
With a blisteringly blue sky I set off on Day 18 of #30daysofbiking up Cragg Vale (where I knocked nearly 2 minutes off my best time up the 5 1/2 mile climb) to head over Baitings Bridge.
The route is closed due to weakness on the crossing but access is allowed for walkers and cyclists. Once over the reservoir you’re led to empty lanes which roll up and over the hills, I was ticking off roads I’d not covered before and climbs new to my flatlander legs.
With over 3000 feet of ascent in under 27 miles it was a stiff ride, but with glorious weather, stunning views and largely empty tarmac it was a joyful couple of hours.
