Relapse – Hannah (Day 16 to 19)

Geraint Thomas rode last year’s Tour de France with a fractured pelvis. Jonny Hoogerland got back on his bike and started the next day having lacerated himself in a nasty crash with a barbed wire fence in the 2011 Tour. Tyler Hamilton came 2nd in the 2002 Giro D’Italia with a fractured shoulder, and completed the 2003 Tour with a fractured collarbone. I have a stinking cold/cough virus, and miss 4 days of 30 days of biking.

Yes, that’s right, I have failed miserably to get on a bike. To be fair, I battled on with parenting duties all day Wednesday, and on Thursday morning painted a temporary bike skills track round Hebden Bridge Park. But that was it. The effort required to poster paint a lap of the park did me in, and with my husband available for childcare I gave in and went to bed. 15 hours of sleep in 24 hours probably proves I was in fact ill.

Having previously been ill for months having battled a virus for too long without stopping to rest, I’m wary of pushing myself when my body is telling me not to. Problem is, sometimes it’s hard to tell whether it’s your body or your head getting in the way of a ride. The last few days have been glorious, and it’s been a real shame to miss the chance to ride in them, so I think it really has been my body that’s given up. However, I’m now feeling a whole lot stronger, and the sun is shining, so I’m going to head out for a gentle pootle up the hill and see how my legs and lungs are feeling. Fingers crossed for a clear run at the final ten days of 30 days of biking…
